Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, May 16, 2008. Tropical Depression 04W will strengthen into a tropical storm while traveling north and then northeastward to the northeast of the Philippines. Landfall is not expected even as the storm travels up towards Japan.

Much of eastern Asia will remain dry as a weak trough of low pressure moves through the Sea of Japan. This trough will bring little else other than more mild temperatures to the region.

Some showers are possible in the Yellow Sea region north of Shanghai.

Farther to the south, very moist flow will continue through the Bay of Bengal. This flow will provide continuing showers and thunderstorms from India through the already devastated Myanmar.

Warm to hot temperatures are expected through southeast China, while much more mild temperatures are anticipated in the Sea of Japan.

Tokyo will rise into the mid-60s(F)/upper 10s(C), while Shanghai will see temperatures in the lower 80s(F)/upper 20s(C). Seoul will rise into the mid-60s(F)/upper 10s(C).

For Australia, a strong trough of low pressure will move through the Great Australian Bight and provide some showers in coastal areas of the Bight region. As the day progresses, rain will move into Victoria and New South Wales. The trough will also filter cold air into the southern portion of the country.

In addition, showers are possible along the coast of Queensland.

Sydney will rise into the lower 70s(F)/lower 20s(C), while Melbourne will see temperatures in the lower 60s(F)/mid-10s(C). Brisbane will rise into the upper 70s(F)/mid-20s(C).

Monsoon rains approaching Myanmar

Dr. Jeff Masters

The weather in the region ravaged by Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar has taken a turn for the better today, after a low pressure system that brought heavy rains and 20-30 mph winds yesterday weakened and moved off to the north. This system appeared to be a threat to develop into a tropical depression yesterday, but interaction with land is hindering its development, and the low is no longer expected to become a tropical depression. Weather History:

Did you know that...

When you think of tornadoes, Alaska usually does not pop into mind. The only recorded Alaskan tornado to touch down occurred on this date in 1968 near Anchorage. Meanwhile, in the lower forty-eight states, another tornado at Jonesboro, Ark. killed 34 people.
